Tehran (ISNA) – Iran's Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif said US' actions against Iranians are sort of war crime as it has targeted civilians in the economic war.

"This era is the era of global trade and economic integration," Zarif said on Wednesday during the International Conference on Global Economy and Sanctions held at Alzahra University.

Answering why he describes US sanctions as economic terrorism, he said, "Hostile and humiliating actions against civilians is called terrorism. When US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo says Iranians should force their government to change its policy, if they want to have food, I think he doesn't have good advisers and lawyers, because his remarks mean terrorism, which is a war crime and terrorism is a sort of international crime".

"Economic terrorism is the suitable description for this behavior. The goal of the sanctions is economic war against our nation to affect their attitude and view, regardless of what the consequences of this war are and what impacts it has on the health and quality of a nation's life".

Pointing that Iran's economic activities faced many difficulties following US' withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Zarif said, "The pressures are continuously on the rise, although our capabilities are also rising to counter sanctions. Iran's approach to counter the maximum pressure is maximum resistance which its most important principle is to rely on domestic capabilities".

He also stressed that while confronting maximum pressure policy, minimizing and managing unnecessary tensions in relations with other states should be on agenda.
